Carl Brashear, who died in 2006, was the stuff heroes are made of. He was the very first African American to join the US Navy in 1948, and trained as a deep sea diver despite the racial prejudice.

He was faced with another challenge in 1966 when he suffered a severe injury to the lower left leg while diving for a hydrogen-bomb. He was not deterred and continued his diving career despite the loss of part of his left leg during a dive mission to salvage a hydrogen bomb. He became the first amputee dive in the navy, and he was the first African American Master Diver.
